The new emission standards for the BS 6 came into effect as of April 1st. Now all new vehicles sold and licensed in India must be compliant with BS 6.

Carmakers have introduced some minor mechanical changes to jump to the stricter BS 6 emission standards. As a result, in some cars both the average fuel economy and power output have marginally improved.

Maruti Suzuki Ciaz

Price Range: Rs 7.88 lakh onwards

Fuel Type: 1.3 Diesel

Economy: 28.09 kmpl

Tata Tiago

Price Range: Rs 3.98 lakh onwards

Tata Nexon is India 's safest vehicle, with NCAP safety rating of 5 stars. This is also the first car to get the certification in India. Seems like Tata is also having the same compliments for their hatchback. As it turns out, Tata Tiago is aiming for a Global NCAP 5-star safety rating.

And in the end, another Maruti! The Ignis is a funky-looking hatchback targeted toward the younger generation. Buyers would be pleased to learn that the Ignis is one of India's most fuel-efficient cars and has a reported figure of 26.8 kmpl which is just 5 per cent lower than the Ciaz. The Ignis also wins brownie points by giving consumers with the diesel motor an automatic option

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Price Range: Rs 5.14 lakh onwards

Fuel Type: 1.3 Diesel

Economy: 28.4 kmpl

Maruti Swift is the most sportive car in its category, easily. Its diesel engine version is also the most frugal model in the semgent, with an ARAI mileage of 28.4 kmpl. The Swift is also quite affordable, and is fairly easy to maintain, both on the new and used car markets.


Honda Amaze

Price Range: Rs 4.73 lakh onwards

Fuel Type: 1.5 Diesel

Economy: 25.8 kmpl



The company’s Maruti Dzire-rival is in its second generation now. It’s substantially more premium than before and comes with a more premium cabin. It also offers CVT option for both petrol and diesel motors. Also, as the earlier generation was on sale in the country for a pretty long duration, it’s easy to find several examples in the used car market. The diesel variant of the Amaze has an ARAI-rated mileage of 25.80 kmpl, which places it on the last spot of our list of most fuel efficient cars in India.
