Locals estimated the temple age at around 200 years old. Some locals felt this was one of 101 temples on the banks of the Penna River built by 'Parasu Ram.'

Throughout the sand mining process, the top of the temple became visible and attempts are now underway by locals to try to recover the temple from the river bed depths.

Three days ago, during a documentation project on heritage sites in the river valley, an ancient temple that remained submerged at Mahanadi in Odisha was found.

The 60-feet temple, believed to be about 500 years old, was recently located as part of the project during an exercise, said Anil Dhir, Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage (INTACH) project co-ordinator in Odisha.

The temple was found near Baideswar in the Cuttack region of Padmavati on the mid-river.
