An ancient center called aazhimala shiva temple with its natural beauty is blessed among the shores of Kerala shiva temple. Aazhimala temple's origin and history has passed its centenary. The original name of the temple is Aaazhimala Pulinkudi Sree Mahadeva Temple. By the existence of Cheetahs in that area years ago was named as Pullikudi. Due to the course of time it changed into Pullingudi.

This Ancient place was one of the hidden hideouts of Pandavas. Natural caves are also located between the rocks. To quench Panchalis thirst, it is a reminder of ancient times that Bheemasena had to make a hole in the rock with his knee to fill the bath.

Neelaniyeru was a great Brahmin who perfected the preaching of Vedas. He was Kadaikulam Madame's chief 's son from Vizhinjam, which is located near Pulinkudi. Maharaja offered 64 temples to be appointed chief priest of Neelaniyeru. Maharaja has provided 58 acres of land in Pulinkudi with this bid and 48 acres in Punnavila with it.Idichathimoopil was Maharaja's reputed bodyguard. He has been noted for his solid physique and military competencies. This were the time of the life of the Matriarchal family system. Idichathimoopil 's Nephew was Neelakandan, he has two daughters. Neelaniyeru had fallen in love with Neelakandan's youngest daughter and had an interest in marriage.In those days the caste system was very rigid so he was declared to be untouchable and expelled from home. Neelaniyeru was not panicking at this decision. He left earlier to meet the father of the girl and Neelakandan had no objection to having his daughter we d to him. Neelakandan and his uncle Idichathimoopil sought counsel, and even uncle had no objection. Idichathimoopil married his grand-niece to Neelaniyeru by being the wedding chief.Neelaniyeru had a lot of land so they lived in Perumkallu, near aaazhimala, under the rocks. He started performing puja's in Pullinkudi every day. Many years later Neelaniyeru took Samadhi to his worshipping place. Sri Narayana Guru Swami once visited this Samadhi after this incident and had an impression that this place is blessed with the presence of Gods, so this place must be worshipped, so a temple must be built.

There are certain historical facts like kannuneerkuzhy. This place burns its name like 2s Kannuneerkuzhy or Kinnakuzhy due to a thread of fresh water streaming between large kicks falling into a rock shaped bowl. As mentioned earlier this was made by Bheemasena to quench the thirst of Panchali as she was prepared to eat salt water.This stream flows in rainy as well as in summer always in the same amount without any climate change. The water is found crystal clear and tastes unique, and is used in temple until recently for Nithyapuja's and is believed to have medicinal values to cure multiple conditions.


Kullakadavu is located to the east of aazhimala temple, where the kanyakumari beach is visible from this place. And from the west Vizhinjam harbor temple, the lighthouse and the places of worship for Christians and Muslims.Thus this holy place is a center of blissful devotion with the blessings of Sri Mahadeva and his natural beauty, and with the love of great saints, the rare luster of celestiality.
