The Shahi Qila 's history states that it was originally built by the Farooqui rulers and resided by Shah Jahan, at a time when he was Burhanpur 's governor. During the first three years of his ascending throne, Shah Jahan was so fond of the fort that it was here in Shahi Qila that he establishes his court. Shah Jahan spent a large amount of time in this area, helping to add to the Shahi Qila. Within the Qila terrace is installed Diwan-i-Aam and Diwan-i-Khas.

The palace's main attraction is the hamam, or the royal bath. It was designed specifically for the wife of Shah Jahan, Begum Mumtaz Mahal, to enjoy a lavish bath with khus, saffron and rose petals in water. During Mughal Period Hammam Khana was built. The baths bear an inscription of the famous Akbar and Jahangir minister Khan Khana Mirza Abdul Rahim Khana. The rooms are roofed with domes.
The Hammam is beautifully decorated with honey-comb-work paintings. The ceiling still has many detailed drawings to it today. One of those paintings portrays a shrine that is said to have inspired the Taj Mahal. One of the amazing facts is that at Burhanpur the Taj Mahal was originally built. The site chosen for this is still empty close to the tapti river. Mumtaz, who had the Taj Mahal built in his memory, died in burhanpur while giving birth to her fourteenth child.
