China has now produced a new border conflict with Bhutan, one of India's traditional allies, pursuing its expansionist agenda. Beijing objected to the grant for Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary (SWS) in eastern Bhutan's Trashigang district bordering India and China at a virtual meeting of the Global Environment Facility ( GEF) in the first week of June, claiming the location had been disputed.

According to Strat News Global, the GEF Council gathered to decide on funding for various environmental projects worldwide, was shocked by China's objection and rubbished it instantly. The majority of the members of the GEF council supported the view of Bhutan, and the chair's draft outline was accepted by the council, and the work plan was adopted despite objections from the Chinese council member.

The council refused to record the reason for objection from China, saying the footnote would only record China's objection to the project. The Chinese council president, however, said he would need time to meet with his higher ups to come to a decision on the matter.

Since then, the Bhutan government has given a formal letter to the GEF council, firmly opposed the references challenging the jurisdiction of Bhutan and its territories at the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary in the council's session papers. Bhutan has urged the GEF council to remove from Council records all references to China's false allegations.
