A new National Education Policy (NEP), recommending drastic reforms in school and higher schools, was cleared up by the Union Cabinet.A NEP is an important mechanism for the country's education growth. First in 1964, MP Siddheshwar Prasad from the Congress criticized the then government for lacking vision and education ideology. A 17-member Committee on Education was formed the same year, headed by then UGC Chairman D S. Kothari, to prepare the National and Coordinated Education Policy. Parliament adopted the first education program in 1968, on the basis of the recommendations of this Committee.

Usually every few decades comes a new NEP. To date India had three. The first came in 1968 and the second came in 1986 under India Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi; in 1992 the 1986 NEP was updated as Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. The third is the NEP published on Wednesday by Narendra Modi's Prime Minister.

NEP 2020's most significant highlights are

  1. a single regulator for higher education institutions.
  2. multiple entry and exit options in degree courses.
  3. discontinuation of MPhil programmes
  4. low stakes board exams.
  5. common entrance exams for universities.
The New Education Policy increases the age range from 6-14 years to 3-18 years of compulsory schooling. The NEP adds a pre-school age range of three-6 years to the program, which is previously announced. 12 years of education with 3 years of Anganwadi  would be the latest system.

As one overarching umbrella body for all higher education, except medical and legal education, the Higher Education Commission of India(HECI) is created. The same set of administrative, accreditation and quality requirements shall apply to public and private higher education institutions.

No strict division of arts and sciences, currículum, non-curriculum practice, professional and academic flows will be created. In the streams students can pick subjects they want. Vocational education starts in 6th grade schools and spans stages.

During this time the undergraduate will be 3 or 4 years with many exit options. Following 1 year in a discipline or field including vocational and technical fields, the college will be required to grant a diploma following 2 years of studies, or a bachelor ’s degrees after three years of studies.
