Alexander the Great, was a Macedonian king and a member of the Argead dynasty. Raised in Pella in 356 BC, he succeeded his father Philip II to the throne when he was 20 years old.He had built one of the ancient world's largest empires, ranging from Greece to north-western India.

The Macedonian King, Alexander launched a campaign on the Indian subcontinent in 326 BC after capturing the Achaemenid Empire of Persia. After gaining control of Gandhara, Alexander advanced to Punjab, where he fought against the regional king Porus, defeated by Alexander in the Battle of the Hydaspes. As a satrap, Alexander allowed Porus to continue to rule his own kingdom. While triumphant, it is likely that the Battle of the Hydaspes was also the Macedonians' most costly battle.

Was Alexander the Great scared of the Magadha King

The march east of Alexander put him in conflict with the Magadha Nanda Empire. The Nanda army actually was five times the size of the Macedonian army.Nanda Empire had maintained an overwhelming force of 200,000 infantry, 80,000 cavalry, 8,000 chariots and 6,000 battle elephants.

His army, tired, homesick and nervous about prospects of further fighting massive Indian armies across the Indo-Gangetic Plain, mutinied at the Hyphasis and refused to march further east. This led Alexander to turn south, advancing through southern Punjab and Sindh, capturing more tribes along the lower Indus River, before eventually turning west.
