കള്ളവും ചതിയുമില്ലാത്ത നാടിന്റെ ഓര്മപുതുക്കി നാം ഓണം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു. പൂക്കളങ്ങളും പൂവിളികളും ഓണക്കളികളും സദ്യയുമെല്ലാം ഓരോ ഓണക്കാലത്തേയും മനസ്സില് മായാത്ത സ്മൃതികളാക്കുന്നു.
ചിങ്ങം പിറക്കുന്നതോടെ ഓണം കാത്തിരിക്കുന്ന മലയാളികളുടെ ആഘോഷം അത്തത്തിന് പൂക്കളമിടുന്നതോടെ ആരംഭിക്കുകയായി. അത്തം തൊട്ട് പത്താം നാളാണ് തിരുവോണം.
Atham is the first day of the ten-day Onam festivities. Atham's day comes ten days before the asterism Onam or Thiru Onam hence the traditional people of Kerala consider Atham holy and auspicious.
Atham is that people from this day on start making pookalam. Pookalam, is an elaborate floral mat laid by house maidens at the front courtyard. It is done in order to invite the holy spirit of legendary King Mahabali whose spirit at the time of Onam is said to visit Kerala. This pookalam is added in subsequent days with more flowers and new designs.
Through Atham Day an atmosphere of joy and rejoicing envelops Kerala's very air as people participate in one or the other activity. All want to celebrate Onam in the best way possible.
