Onam is the state of Kerala's largest and most significant festival. It is a harvest festival and is celebrated by citizens of all cultures with joy and excitement in the state. The festival is being celebrated to welcome King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to be visiting Kerala at the time of Onam, according to a famous legend.
Kerala's rich cultural heritage comes out in its best shape and spirit during the festival, which lasts ten days. Getting part of the grand carnival really is a treat. Kerala people are doing elaborate arrangements to celebrate it in the best way possible.
How to celebrate Onam, in 10 days
Day 1 : Atham, On atham day Marked by Pookalam style, which is done only with yellow flowers. The scale of pookalam rises day by day.
Day 2 : Chithira ,The Pookalam adds another layer of herbs, and house cleaning begins on Day 2.
Day 3 : Chodhi , On this day, families continue shopping alongside a new layer of flowers added to the Pookalam.
Day 4 : Visakham , The various competitions begin on Day 4 and the Pookalam has added new layer of flowers.
Day 5 : Anizham , Vallamkali Boat Race begins in many parts of Kerala
Day 6 : Thriketa , Participants start dedicating their entire time to the festivities.
Day 7 : Moolam , Many places see the festival-related launch of Ona Sadya and the dance performances.
Day 8 : Pooradam , Vamana and King Mahabali statues are being cleaned and placed in Pookalam centre.
Day 9 : Uthradom , King Mahabali is believed to enter the State on this day.
Day 10 : Thiruvonam , Citizens are taking an early bath, and going to prayer temples. In all households the grand Thiruona Sadya (Special Meal for Onam) is being prepared. Contests such as dance and boat races continue throughout the province.
