Illikkal Mala consists of three hills, each rising 3,400 ft above sea level. Every one of the hills has its own unique shape. Each of them resembles a mushroom, so it's called Kuda Kallu. The second hill has a slight hunch on the hands, and is called Koonu Kallu. Those two hills are linked by a 1⁄2-foot-wide bridge named Narakapalam.
There remains only one half of the original rock, while the other half of the rock has fallen off. It is from this peak that many mountain streams originate and flow down to form the Meenachil River. Tourists are expected to walk less than 1 km to reach the peak summit.
The mythical medicinal herb Neela Koduveli is reported to grow here. It is also believed that this legendary blue flower holds magical powers which could increase wealth and guarantee a rich harvest.
Illikal kallu fascinates with several hills rising to the clouds and deep valleys. The Arab Sea can be seen as a small, blue line on the far horizon. The sunset view in the evening of a full moon day from above the top can be stunning.
