The joint winners for the 2020 Olympiad were announced on Sunday in India and Russia following internet disconnection and server failure in the final round.Initially, Nihal Sarin and Divya Deshmukh were considered to lose their matches because the Internet connection had broken and had elapsed. In their tournaments both held strong places. Some time later, however, the International Chess Federation declared both teams to be joint champions.

This was the first time that, owing to a COVID-19 pandemic, FIDE, the international chess federation, kept the Olympiad online.

The first round of the finals finished with a draw of 3-3 with all six games stalling. With victories for Andrey Esipenko over Sarin and Polina Shuvalov over Deshmukh, Russia won second round 4.5-1.5. This resulted in a dispute because Indians argued that the loss was due to internet problems. In the second round the captain Vidit Gujrathi drew with Daniil Dubov. Anand, coming for P Harikrishna with Ian Nepomniachtchi.

Ninety-two thousand people signed in from India to see the ending and almost a million watched at it worldwide.
