Kamala Harris was born in Oakland , California, on October 20 , 1964. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a breast cancer scientist who had emigrated from Tamil Nadu , India in 1960 to pursue a Ph.D. in endocrinology at UC Berkeley. Her father, Donald Harris, is an Emeritus Professor of Economics at Stanford University, who emigrated from British Jamaica in 1961 to study economics at UC Berkeley.
Kamala Harris is a graduate of Howard University, and Hastings college, University of California. In 2003, she was elected 27th District Attorney for San Francisco, serving until 2011. In 2010, Harris was narrowly elected Attorney General of California and was re-elected in 2014.
Elected to the Senate in 2016, Harris was the second African-American woman and the first South Asian–American to serve in the United States Senate. During that period she gained a national profile for her pointed questioning of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings
