Krishna Janmashtami is an annual Hindu festival, celebrating the birth of Krishna, Vishnu 's eighth avatar. It is observed on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha in Shraavana or Bhadrapad according to the Hindu lunisolar calendar, which overlaps with the Gregorian calendar of August or September.


Lord Krishna was born in Rohini Nakshatra on the Ashtami date in the month of Bhadrapada according to mythology.

Rasa Lila 's tradition is especially common in the Mathura region, in northeastern Indian states such as Manipur and Assam, and in parts of Rajasthan and Gujarat. Numerous teams of amateur artists act on it, cheered on by their local communities, and these plays of drama-dance begin a few days before each Janmashtami.

In the Braj area of northern India, in cities such as Mathura where the Hindu tradition states that Krishna was born, and in Vrindavan where he grew up. Vaishnava communities in those cities in Uttar Pradesh, as well as others in the state, as well as locations in Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Uttarakhand and northern Himalayan celebrate Janmashtami.
