S. P. Balasubrahmanyam is an Indian film playback singer,music director, voice actor and film producer. He has recorded more than 40,000 songs in 16 Indian languages.
S. P. Balasubrahmanyam was born in Nellore. He enrolled with the intention of becoming an engineer at the JNTU College of Engineering Anantapur. He stopped his studies early due to typhoid and entered the Chennai Institution of Engineers as an associate member.
In 1964, he won the first prize in an amateur singer music competition organized by the Telugu Cultural Organization based in Madras. His first audition song was "Nilave Ennidam Nerungadhe."His playback debut on 15 December 1966 with Sri Sri Maryada Ramanna, a Telugu movie .The 1980 film Sankarabharanam brought Balasubrahmanyam to international prominence. The film is considered by the Telugu film industry to be one of the best films ever .Balasubrahmanyam was awarded his first National Film Award for Sankarabharanam for Best Male Playback Singer.
In 1989 he was the playback singer in the blockbuster Maine Pyar Kiya , film's soundtrack was very popular, and he won a Best Male Playback Singer Filmfare Award for the song Dil Deewana.
His fourth National Film Award was got from Ganayogi Panchakshari Gavayi (1995), for the song "Umandu Ghumandu.".
The Chennai Express Title Song, which sings for lead actor Shahrukh Khan under the musical direction of Shekar-Vishal, is the famous song Balasubrahmanyam released in 2013.
For his work in four different languages Kannada, Telugu , Tamil, and Hindi, Andhra Pradesh State Nandi Awards for his works for Telugu cinema, many other national awards from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, he has got 6 national film Awards for Best Male playback singer.He is a recipient of civil awards from the Government of India, Padma Shri (2001) and Padma Bhushan (2011).
