Kochi(Perumpadappu Swaroopam) had been the scene of India's first European settlement. The Portuguese admiral Pedro Álvares Cabral, landed at Cochin in the year 1500 after being repelled from Calicut.


At that time Cochin 's ruler was Unniraman Koyikal 1. He ruled at Kalvathi from the Palace. The King was visited by Commander Cabral and he was received with great honor.Promising his support in Calicut 's conquest, the admiral coaxed the king to allow them to construct a Cochin factory. The king, assured of the assistance, called war with the Calicut Zamorins.

Unniraman Koyikal 1 died in 1503, when the Zamoorins attacked Cochin with His nephew and two other Thampurans. All of them died in the war at Kadavth, according to Portuguese. But according to Thripunithura Grandhavari the death was at Palluruthi.
