Annigeri is a historic town that was an important part of the Western Chalukyan Empire. It was also a part of the realm of Hoysalas, Yadavas, and Kalachurya. It also acted as the capital of the Kalyani Chalukyas for a brief time as the Kalachuryas captured their principal city, Kalyani. The temple has a roof on its walls supporting 76 pillars and carvings of mythological figures.
Adam Hardy places the temple at the Lakkundi school and marks it as the precursor of the Mahadeva temple at Ittagi. During the Hoysala rule, the temple was largely patronised and expanded.
Annigeri is very similar to the Hublis. Annigeri is situated 35 km from Hubli and can be reached by bus from Hubli. The best time to visit the temple is between December and January. This is the time of the temple car festival, the Rathotsava, when the idol of Lord Amruteshwara is taken out in a Ratha procession.
