The 5th of September is celebrated in the country every year as Teachers' Day. A day devoted to teachers and their contributions to shaping one 's life commemorates Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan 's birthday.



Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was an Indian philosopher, writer, and statesman who served as India's first Vice President and India 's second President.He was born on Sep 5, 1888. As an educator, he was edification advocate and a distinguished diplomat, academician, and above all, a great teacher.He was among the most distinguished scholars of comparative religion and philosophy in India in the twentieth century. Dr Radhakrishnan, author of Rabindranath Tagore 's Philosophy, had a master's degree in philosophy and was responsible for drawing global attention to Indian philosophy.

After graduating from Madras Christian College in 1911, he became Assistant Professor of Philosophy and later Professor of Philosophy at Madras Presidency College, then Professor of Philosophy at Mysore University.

King George V Chair of Mental and Moral Science at Calcutta University and Spalding Professor of Eastern Religion and Ethics at Oxford University, where he became the first Indian to hold a professorship at Oxford University. In 1926, 1929, and 1930 he was Upton Lecturer at Manchester College , Oxford. In 1930 he was called to the University of Chicago as Haskell lecturer in Comparative Religion.

His theory was based in Advaita Vedanta, reinterpreting this practise for a modern understanding. He defended Hinduism against what he termed "uninformed Western critique," leading to the development of the Hindu identity of today. He was instrumental in shaping Hindu understanding, both in India and in the west, and gained a reputation as a bridge-builder between India and the west.

Teachers' Day is celebrated on his birthday since 1962.
