The Government of India Act 1858 was an Act of the British Parliament that transferred to the British Crown the East India Company 's government and territories. The rule of the company over British territories in India came to an end and it was passed on to the British government directly.
- A new office, the Secretary of State for India, was established with full authority and power over the india. The State Secretary was a member of the British cabinet and was eventually accountable to the British Parliament.
- It set up a Council of India of 15 members to assist the Secretary of State for India. An advisory body was the assembly. The chairman of the council was made secretary of state.
- As a corporate body, it was the Secretary of State-in-Council, capable of suing and being tried in India and England.
