Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will be permitted to travel to Hathras to meet the family of a 20-year-old Dalit woman who was allegedly raped and killed by gangs last month in a savage crime that shocked the country.
"No force in the world can stop me from going to Hathras and meet the victim's family, share their grief," Rahul tweeted in Hindi on Saturday.
Priyanka drove the car herself, sitting next to her in the front seat with her brother and former Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
This is the second attempt by the Congress leaders to meet Hathras and talk to the young woman's family whose body was then incinerated at 2.30 am by the police in a secret ceremony.
Earlier in the day, after the Uttar Pradesh administration said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) had finished its investigation into the case, journalists were allowed to enter the village. Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish Kumar Awasthi and DGP Hitesh Chandra Awasthy met the relatives of the dead today as well.
Earlier, arrangements were made by the Gautam Buddh Nagar police to stop Congressional MP Rahul Gandhi and Party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi in Noida. There has been a strong deployment of police forces to keep the leaders of Congress from entering the Delhi-U.P. Border .
the Joint Magistrate of Hathras, Prem Prakash Meena, told reporters that political leaders would not be allowed to enter Hathras. 'Section 144 is still in force and the district's borders are closed,' he said.
