At the Hubbali railway junction in Karnataka, Indian Railways plans to construct the world's longest railway platform, reported by Deccan Herald.

The length of the platform is currently 550 metres. It was originally expected to be extended to 1,400 metres in length. Now, the South-Western Railway (SWR) has agreed to increase the distance to 1,505 metres. It will cost Rs 90 crore for this expansion.

It is expected that the building will be finished by January 2021. The work was supposed to be completed in June, but due to the situation at Covid-19, there was a shortage of staff. More than 250 workers are now working and the project will be completed by the end of January, said E Vijaya, Chief Public Relations Officer of SWR.

At the end of the project, the railway station will get three new additional platform, bringing the total number to 8.

Currently, the longest operating platform is Gorakhpur railway station in Uttar Pradesh. It was renovated in 2013 and is 1,366 metres long and also serves as the headquarters of the North-Eastern Railway (NER).
