On Wednesday, the ruling CPI(M)-led LDF in Kerala appeared set for a sweep in the state government's local body polls. BJP, in the 2020 Kerala local body elections, made history by winning one seat in the Kannur Municipal Corporation. 



VK Shyju, the BJP candidate, won the Pallikkunnu division, which comes under the Kannur corporation. 845 votes were won, a plurality compared to the other candidates. UDF candidate T Jayakrishnan finished second and LDF came third. 

Out of the 55 divisions, UDF candidates won in 34 which is seven more than they won in 2015 elections.the LDF failed to retain the seats won in previous election. The Leftists could only win 19 seats this time. UDF candidate T Jayakrishnan came second with 609 votes, and LDF candidate Umesh came third. 

The NDA won eight seats this year in the Thalassery Municipality (Kannur), winning three seats more than it did in 2015. The BJP secured three seats in the Taliparamba Municipality. In Iritty Municipality, the NDA also won three seats.
