Badavi linga Temple is a wonderful temple in Hampi dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is located near the Lakshmi Narasimha Temple. it is the largest monolithic Shiva Linga in Hampi. The Shiva Linga has a three eye mark drawn on it in line carving. The three eye mark depicts the three eyes of Prabhu Shiva.
The sanctum in which the Linga is installed is always filled with water as a water channel is made to flow through it. It has a height of 3 meters. It is believed that the temple has been in existence since the period of the Vijayanagara Empire.
According to Hindu mythology, the Ganga was sent down from the heavens to relieve the drought on Earth. The river, on the other hand, was so powerful that it could break the earth in two if it were to fall on it. By allowing the Ganga to fall on his matted hair, Lord Shiva agreed to take the burden of the impact. As a result, he aided in the release of a smooth flowing river from his hair onto the ground. A dripping pot hanged over the Linga in Siva temples serves as an iconic representation of this.
The Badavilinga Temple's massive Shiva Linga is installed in a small stone chamber. Devotees can only enter through a single opening in front of the chamber. The absence of a ceiling in the stone chamber is an interesting feature of the design. During the day, sunshine streams in through the ceiling opening, flooding the Shiva Linga in light.
